Over the years we have had a lot of success in tournaments run by the SRU. We have, on a number of occasions, won the Scottish Cup. A number of our ex-players have went on from our Club to play for Hawick and Scotland - one being Scotland winger, Nikki Walker, but other boys play the game at semi or junior levels just for the enjoyment of our wonderful game.
Due to large numbers playing for S1 and S2, we have to rotate players in the squads and hopefully we can keep all these boys playing the game. As the boys progress to S3 and the under-16s, the squads are getting smaller due to boys playing other sports or playing semi junior rugby. This is a big concern to us as we are struggling to keep big enough squads to fulfil our fixtures.
Without the coaches we could not run our team, so many thanks must be given to these men who give up weekends and nights to help the boys learn the game.
Fundraising is another problem - last season it cost just under £100 for each boy to play for us. All this money has to be found as we get no help from SRU or the senior teams. A number of events are held over the year to raise this money from coffee mornings, raffles, race nights, to making calendars. A hard working committee really have to work to keep the money coming in and I hope we can have another financially good year.
As we play home games at the park and use the Volunteer to change and feed the teams, I would like to thank the Lindean and Wanderers for their support.
I hope we can have a great year both on and off the pitch. I do want the boys to enjoy their rugby and see what a great game it is and let the boys meet and make good friends through playing.
