Albion S1 v Boroughmuir S1 - Match Report for December 6th

Boroughmuir 17 Hawick Albion 11

this was the game the boys were waiting for what a change from September, the boys have come on enormously from that first match.

The weather has good sun was out a bit chilly but good playing conditions. The Squad was hit with off the pitch injuries to some of the forwards and some others were not well (woman flu). The boys were up for a tough game with high hopes of a close score line at the end.

The game was played over 3 X 15 mins segments. After a good warm up the young Teries were ready to start, after the kick off Boroughmuir got possession and scored the first try within a minute. This took the boys by surprise and with word of encouragement from the side line they started to tighten up the defence and move the ball out wide to the wings and this was rewarded by a cracking try from the Flying Rooster which was ably converted by Lewis Ferguson. The Boroughmuir pack were well drilled and kept the Hawick Forwards very busy and after a prolonged attack Boroughmuir went over the line for their second try. The young Teries did not give up their attack on the Boroughmuir line with some excellent play from all the forwards. The first 15 ended Boroughmuir 6 Albion 4

In the second 15 the boys were eager to continue this hard fought match, the Hawick boys were camped on the Boroughmuir line for a long spell however the home side defended very well against the Hawick boys. The home side were pulled up by the ref and a scrum was awarded to the Hawick boys 5 meters from the line, the Hawick Scrum is a force to be reckoned these days and when the ball came out scrum half Deaglan saw a gap in the home side defence and went over to scored the Albion’s second try which was converted by Lewis Ferguson. In the dying seconds of this play time the game was at its toughest with some boys feeling the knocks they had received, when the home side broke away to score their third try, a lapse on the Albion’s part in defence. The score after the second play time was Boroughmuir 9 Albion 8

After the break with one point in the game the boys were ready to start the last 15. Boroughmuir came out fighting (in more ways then one) and were soon up at the Hawick 5 metre line again some great defending from the young Teries stopped the home side from scoring, the boys got the ball away from the home side and with some quick hands and support for the wings the Flying Rooster went over to score his second try of the day. Boroughmuir did not take this try lying down and with some hard fought ball possession and some poor defence at this time by the Hawick boys Boroughmuir were allowed to score and this was converted. With the score only 3 points apart it was all to play for in the

dying minutes. The Hawick boys gave it one last effort against the home team however in the last seconds the Boroughmuir broke away down the wing to score this put the game out of the Hawick boys reach when the final whistle blew, final score Boroughmuir 17 Hawick Albion 11. The boys should be proud (as we the coaching team) are of their performance on Sunday as they grow in strength and skill every week well done to all the boys.

Albion S1 v Portobello / Heriots S1 28th November

Albion 10 Portobello / Heriots 12

It was a very cold wet and sleety day at Portobello, as Portobello and Heriots were unable to field full squads they were able to put out a combined team to play the Young Teries. Portobello were the first to score in 5 minutes from the off this was due to some poor tackling and defensive play from the Hawick boys. With that said the Hawick team started to play some good rugby (slow start due to cold) and with some good passing and strong defensive work from the forwards the ball came to Matthew Bell who scored a fine try with 12 minutes gone. Score after the first 15 minutes Portobello 4 Albion 3.

In the 2nd third Portobello were trying hard to get past the Hawick Defence and with the help of the ref this was achieved within 5 minutes. Hawick not to be outdone scored after 12 minutes with a good try from Grant Huggan and was converted by Lewis Ferguson. The Hawick pack showed some great scrumming and pushed the opposition at every scrum even took some balls form the opposition in the scrum. The game should be a flowing game however the referee on the day stopped play for reasons only known to him which disadvantaged the Hawick side. In the dying minutes of this playing time Portobello scored their try. Score after the 2nd 15, Portobello 12 Albion 7.

In the last 15 minutes of this game the Hawick boys showed some good team work and for the best part were only metres from the Portobello Line, the Hawick boys should have scored more tries but some P7 mentality crept in to the game (my ball I will not PASS to my team) which cost the team chances to score. This along with the ref what can I say! The Hawick pack again showed their strength in the scrum and with in metres of the Portobello line drove the Porto pack back and with some quick thinking the scrum half (Deaglan Lightfoot) got the ball from the scrum and went through a gap in the Portobello defence to score a good try. After the kick off the Hawick boys were up and at the opposition and in a short space of time were at the Portobello line, however decisions by the Ref only known to him denied a free flowing game with penalty after penalty against the Hawick team which denied the Hawick boys. Full time score Portobello 12 Albion 10.

Albion S1 v Heriots S1 15th November 2009

Albion 24 Heriots 8

The Albion boys were in good spirits and ready to take on the second match of the day against Heriots S1. The ref for the day was Rocky Johnson.
The Albion boys were ready to take on Heriots after beating Gala in the first game. The Albion boys from the start showed some fine tackling and rucking the forwards getting possession of the ball however with a lapse of concentration on the Hawick boys’ part Heriots scored the first try 10 minutes in the game which was converted. The Hawick pack came back at the Heriots boys and with a fine run Robbie McLean scored the Albion’s first try which was converted by Lewis Ferguson. The forwards were playing a good game with strong rucking and getting the ball out to the backs with some good ball handling the ball came to Darcy the flying Rooster who had a good run down the wing and went over the line to score the Albion’s second try which was converted by Lewis.

In the second half the Albion boys took control of the game again the forwards played some good rugby and got the ball out to the backs when Matthew Mallin took control of the ball and had a great run and scored a lovely try which was converted by Lewis Ferguson. The Albion boys were now looking the better team and working as a team they showed they can control the game, Lewis Ferguson kicked the ball into the Heriots half when Owen (Ronaldo) McWatters showed some fine football skills with the Heriots backs close on his heels got the ball over the try line and scored his first try for the Albion which was converted by Lewis. At this point it would seem Owen (Ronaldo) McWatters forgot which game he was playing and again with some fine football skills he dribbled the ball from the half way to score his second try in the corner well done Owen the try was converted by Lewis. With time running out in this second half the Hawick boys were putting pressure on the Heriots boys when one of the Heriots pack broke away and scored a try which was converted. Hawick kicked of and the forwards got control of the ball and with good support play the ball came to Alastair Gray who scored a great try which was converted by Lewis the Final Score was Hawick Albion S1 24 Heriots 8.

Albion S1 v Gala Red Triangle S1 15th November 2009

Albion 18 Gala 4
The Albion boys were in good spirits and ready to take on Gala S1 the weather was mixed with some light showers. We had a lot of supporters to watch the game which the boys appreciate. The ref for the day was Rocky Johnson.
The Albion boys faced up to the gala boys from the start and with some fine tackling and the forwards getting position of the ball Sean Chapman scored the first try in 4 minutes. The Gala pack came back at the Hawick boys however the Albion boys put up a strong defence at this stage it was the Hawick Boys who were looking the better side. The forwards were playing a good game with strong rucking and getting the ball out to the backs when Robbie McLean got the ball and with a good run with support with him he scored a lovely try with 8 minutes gone. I think Robbie must have got a taste of try scoring as he went over the line within 5 minutes to score his second try which was converted by Captain Lewis Ferguson.

In the second half the Albion boys took control of the game again the forwards played some good rugby and got the ball out to the backs and with some quick hands to Darcy the flying Rooster who scored his first try which was converted by Lewis Ferguson. The Gala boys came back at the Hawick and scored a try soon after which was converted. With time running out in the second half the Hawick boys were putting pressure on the Gala boys on the 10m line when Patrick Solley broke away to score a lovely try which was converted by Lewis the Final Score was Hawick Albion S1 18 Gala RT 4

S1 Team: Aiden Chapman, Darcy Graham, Deaglan Lightfoot, Greg Scott, Kyle Currie, Lewis Ferguson Captain, Matthew Mallin, Patrick Solley, Reece Hartdegen, Robbie Linton, Robbie McLean, Sean Chapman, Alastair Gray, Rian Taylor, Ross Graham. Owen McWatters, Daniel Suddon.

Match report Albion S1 V Dunfermline S1 Sunday 8th November
Dunfermline 11 Hawick Albion 27.

What can I say! The boys played a fantastic game of rugby on Sunday; such a shame parents/Guardians were not there to see a one of the best performances the Si have played this season. The Management team (Harry, Al and Lex) would like to Congratulate Lewis Ferguson on been made Captain of the S1 Squad and also to Fraser Renwick who is Vice Captain and to Daniel Suddon who is in charge of the Forwards.
The game was played in 3X20 minutes game time. The Dunfermline Squad were a big Strong and well drilled pack which put the Albion boys to the test from the start. The Dunfermline pack were very physical in their approach which took the Hawick boys by surprise and allowed Dunfermline to score the first try with only 7 minutes gone, however not to be out done the Hawick boys stuck in with some excellent work from the forwards in keeping possession of the ball and getting it out to the backs and with some good passing got the ball to the Darcy the Flying Rooster who scored the first try for the Hawick side and was converted by Lewis Ferguson. Dunfermline used their strength in the forwards to drive the Hawick boys over the line to score their second try which was converted; score after the 1st 20 Dunfermline 7 Albion 4.

In the 2nd 20 the Hawick boys came out with a we can win Attitude and with some fine Tackling and Rucking from Fraser Renwick, Daniel Suddon Dai Swailes and Matthew Mallin (to name just a few), which allowed the backs to get the ball to Lewis Ferguson and with a fine run scored a lovely try. With the Hawick Forwards now having to work hard to keep the Dunfermline Forwards at bay the Hawick boys were now relaying on the backs to do the running, once again the ball came down the line to The Flying Rooster who scored his second try and was converted by Lewis Ferguson. Dunfermline were quick to respond and scored their third try soon after. Score after the 2nd 20 was Dunfermline 11 Albion 11.

In the 3rd 20 the Hawick boys were starting to believe in themselves which saw a huge change in attitude in the way they played as this was evident when The Flying Rooster scored his third try and was converted by Lewis, with some very physical rugby and hard tackling and rucking the Hawick boys were looking the better team. Daniel Suddon had a great run down the wing with good support and scored a great try which was converted by Lewis. The Hawick boys were now on a high and within a short space of time Alasdair Gray after a superb run scored under the posts which was converted. The Hawick boys were now looking good with confidence and a super attitude, all boys were now tired and with the final stage of the game coming up the Dunfermline forwards never gave up and the Hawick boys saw off the relentless attacks on the Hawick line. The Hawick boys managed one more surge with great team effort and fine play from everyone on the Pitch the forwards were now in control and again with good handling and good team play the ball came to the Flying Rooster who scored his 4th try of the day which was converted by Lewis and the final score: Dunfermline 11 Hawick Albion 27.

The Albion Team: Daniel Suddon(Pack Leader), Dai Swailes Fraser Renwick (vice Captain ), Aiden Chapman, Robbie Linton, Patrick Solley, Robbie McLean, Rian Taylor, Ross Graham, Reece Hartdegen, Matthew Bell, Lewis Ferguson (Captain) Greg Scott, Deaglan Lightfoot, Darcy Graham (Flying Rooster), Alastair Gray, Matthew Mallin, Owen McWatters

Albion S1 V Sterling S1 Sunday 1st Nov

Few people find November pleasant. The Anglo-Saxons called November 'Wind month', because it was the time when the cold winds began to blow Oh and it rained too.

And so The Albion S1’s were put to the test against a strong Stirling Side on a very wet Volunteer pitch. The Stirling Side having the better of the early exchanges quickly went 2 tries ahead. The Albion boys showing some excellent scrumaging and rucking the boys were always giving as good as they got, with the conditions becoming impossible for good handling. It was with some good footballing skills by Lewis Ferguson that the Albion broke the dreadlock with Lewis touching down in the corner.

In the second half it was the Albion Boys that looked the stronger side and were unlucky not to score to make the scores level, it was at this time the Referee and Coaches were concerned about the boy’s safety as the pitch was forming puddles and the decision was taken to abandon the rest of the game with 7 minutes to go. Well done lads it was a brave effort in extreme conditions.

Thank you to the brave hardy parents/guardians who braved the weather to watch the match it is much appreciated. Thanks to Al Chapman Coach, Ryan Hogg Forwards Coach and on the spot news reporter Lex the scribe McLean.

Albion S1 S2 combined v Langholm 25/10/09

The S1/S2 teams were in action again on Sunday as the S2’s have not played for some weeks. It was decided to play the S1/2 team who went to Bats (Green Shirts) against the S1/2 team who went to Berwick (Blue Shirts) against each other to warm up before the main game against Langholm.

The game was very close as both teams were evenly matched up front and at the backs at the end of the match it was the S1/2 Blue team who won by a conversion Tries 3 conversions 1 to 3 tries to 2 conversions.

The Langholm squad were ready to play some good rugby, they had a big forward pack however the Albion boys showed they were more then able to match the Langholm side. The game was to be split between S1/2 (Green team) and S1/2 (Blue Team). The S1/2 Blue team played Langholm first in a game of 2 X15 mins halves. The Langholm side were relying on the big forwards to take the play to the Hawick team, however after 1 or 2 starts the Albion boys got the measure of the Langholm side and closed them down with some fine tackling to the big forwards.

First blood was to the Albion and Langholm Replied shortly after when the Forwards broke through to score their first try, a lapse on the Albion tackling. The Albion showed some fine forward play and good handling to the backs for Hizzy to score with a fine run.

The Langholm pack never gave up however the Hawick side showed that regular playing made them the better side up against the big Langholm pack.

The Final Score: Albion Blues 11 Langholm 5 at full time.

Albion Greens were next to take on the Langholm Boys, 2 X 15 mins each way. This team was smaller in size however they put in some great tackles (Darcy the flying Rooster) on wing showed no fear against the big Langholm Forwards with some good tackles. The Albion Forwards gave a good account of themselves and with some good Handling and from the backs moving the ball to the wing, which saw the faster boys Lewis Ferguson, Matthew Bell and The flying Rooster all scoring tries.

Half time score was Albion Green’s 11 Langholm 0.

The second half the Albion boys were eager for more and they were not to be disappointed with some great play by Stuart Maxwell who scored a hat trick of tries. Langholm were not to be out done by the Hawick Boys and came back with 2 tries. The mixture of S1 and S2 Players showed how versatile they can be with both teams working well together with good support play on both sides. With little time left on the clock Dean Gillan went over to score the last try of the match, this was a good finish to a good clean game from all involved.
Final Score: Albion Greens 29 Langholm 7

Albion S1 Vs Currie S1

The Albion S1 Boys went to Currie with High Expiations of giving the Currie S1 Team a good game. The travailing supporters were not to be disappointed thanks to those parents who travelled to Currie the boys appreciated the support. The Albion matched the Currie forwards and backs in the first period. Currie Drew first blood after 4 minutes of play with a try which was converted, the Albion were quick to respond with some good work by the forwards and backs with good handling out to Darcy the flying Rooster who scored the first try.

Currie were quick to respond with their forwards who showed a lot more discipline in their moves then the Hawick Boys when Currie drove over the line to score the second try and this was converted. The Hawick boys not to be out done showed again the forward’s and back’s working together with the ball moving down the line to Darcy the Flying Rooster who went over the line a second time this was converted and the score after the first period was Currie 8 Albion 7.

The second period the Hawick boys matched Currie for possession however the Currie team were more in control with their forwards and this showed when Currie went on to score 3 more tries. With the final score Currie 19 Hawick Albion 7.

The S1 team showed a lot of promise today however they need to continue doing this throughout the whole game and not now and then. Well done to the team you all showed flair and enthusiasm against Currie keep it up so we can give Currie a better game when they return in the New Year.

Again thanks to the Coach Alasdair Chapman and Ryan Hogg forwards Coach and Lex McLean with input from Dougie Anderson during the warm up.

The Albion Boys can take away a lot from this game as the Currie Coach said “Today’s Opponents provided as stern a test as we have had all season. The Hawick boys certainly fronted up and the return trip in the New Year will be Eagerly Anticipated by both teams”.

Hawick Albion S1 V Dumfries 4th October

Albion S1 45pts V Dumfries 7pts

The Albion S1 Team played some good rugby against Dumfries who turned up with only 12 players the Albion boys made up the difference 3 players per 15 minutes playing time (well done to all those boys who played Grant Huggan, Robbie Mclean, Reece Hartdegen, Aiden Chapman, Deaglan Lightfoot, Darcy Graham Kyle Currie, Greg Scott). The First try was in 2 minutes from kick off with the S1 showing their experience against a very young and inexperienced Dumfries side by scoring 13 tries and converting 6 of these. The tries came from Aiden Chapman, Grant Huggan, Darcy (the flying rooster) Graham, Clark Chalmers, Deaglan Lightfoot, Craig Glendinning scored 3 tries, Lewis Ferguson also scored 3 tries, Matthew Mallin and Sean Chapman.
The forwards had a good run in this game and the fast running backs gave Dumfries problems every time they had the ball.
Darcy “ the flying rooster” gave an impressive performance, for both sides (scoring 2 tries for Dumfries) while abley supported by Aiden Chapman and Deaglan Lightfoot.
Dai Swailes had a great game today with his support play in the ruck has did Daniel Suddon with some fine indivudal performances from all the S1 team.
Well done to the Albion S1 and thanks to Alastair Chapman and Steve McLean the S1 coaching team.

Hawick Albion S1/2 combined teams 27/9/09 Berwick and Edinburgh BATS

The S1 and S2 Albion had two combined teams on the road on Sunday one team away to Berwick under the charge of David Lowrie S2 and Alastair Chapman S1 and came away with a very impressive win. Playing a young Berwick side Hawick showed up well and run in 10 tries 8 of them converted everyone playing their part in a good advert for attacking Rugby Final score Berwick-4 Hawick Albion S1/2-38.
The other combined team had the slightly longer trip to Raeburn place to face an S1/2 combined team from Edinburgh BATS under the charge of Craig Black S2,Mick Gillan S2 and Steven Mclean S1. The forwards had their best run this season and the fast running backs gave the hosts problems every time they had the ball, the game was 10 minutes old when Stuart Maxwell S2 went over for his first of 3 tries after a move that had some great support play and a final pass that sent Maxwell over in the corner.
Lewis Ferguson S1 was next on the score sheet with great break from centre that split the BATS defence to go in under the posts . BATS did pull a try back on 20 minutes but Maxwell bagged his second on 23 minutes.
The second half was much of the same with Albion on top in most phases of the game Dean Gillan S2 at stand off  had a good game and kept the hosts pinned back in their own half with the boot. Maxwell went over for his hatrick 10 minutes into the half, then a superb  kick to touch from a penalty from Gillan saw the Albion lineout just short of the BATS try line the code was called and Macauley Trotter S2nwent from the ruck to score his first try of the season. The hosts went over the Albion line 3 times but the ball was not grounded so therefore no score was given. With the game into the last few minutes Matthew Bell S1 went in at the corner to make the final score BATS-4 Hawick Albion S1/2-20. For the neutral these two teams had been thrown together on Friday and had only had 45 minutes during the warm up at both venues but to see them play you would think they had played and trained together for 4-5 months, so its well done to both S/1 and S/2 players coaches and parents that took cars to make the trips possible and a special thanks to Billy Brunton (Hawick Legion) for the use of their minibus for the Edinburgh trip.
